MEDIA ADVISORY

2006: STAY ALIVE IMANI Anti-Violence Youth Conference

In the midst of the city’s highest murder rate in 10 years, the House of Umoja Pulls Out All Stops In
An Effort To Begin A Process of Peace

PHILADELPHIA – On Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. the House of Umoja will hold a press conference at the House of Umoja, 5625 W. Master Street, to reveal the strategies Umoja will use during its historic 2006: STAY ALIVE IMANI Anti-Violence Youth Conference.

The conference will be held on this Sunday, January 1, 2006, the last day of Kwanzaa (IMANI) from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Pinn Memorial Baptist Church located 54th Street and Wynnefield Avenue. Based on the strategies Umoja used during its peace campaign “No Gang War ‘74” which virtually eliminated street gang turf wars here in Philadelphia almost three decades ago, the conference is an intense strategic effort to compel youth to commit to peace by not engaging in acts of violence.

In developing a working model to help diffuse violence in schools, the 2006 STAY ALIVE IMANI Anti-Violence Youth Conference will target Overbrook students ages 15-18. The conference is a Kwanzaa celebration augmented by forums on barriers to peace, peace negotiations, and awesome entertainment including Hidden Beach Recording Artists, KINDRED the family soul and words of encouragement by anchorwoman, Renee Chenault-Fattah.

The media will be apprised of the detailed strategies the conference will employ, meet principles involved in making the conference happen, as well as be requested to partner with the House of Umoja and the community in supporting the IMANI Pledge.
